Nebraska: Windier Than Iowa

Alright, Nebraska wasn't as boring as all that. It has some high points, such as the original Pony Express Office, which was refurbished and moved a few miles south to be near the freeway. Below is a photo of the exterior, with a lovely old lantern that really captured my interest:

Tiny little place. One thing I've noticed from seeing older buildings on this trip is how small of a space Americans used to occupy. What happened to that? Our big sprawling households now, with ever imaginable appliance and closets to hold all sorts of junk- what's up with that?

One little spot on the Neb. highway had planned to make this a tourist trap at some point in time. The plywood tipi below seemed to have an access drive, and there were other weird things around it that I couldn't photograph due to the brush and weeds.

Once we got a few hundred feet down the access drive, however, we were greeted by a huge dilapidated barn that had signs for 'Antiques' and 'Home Cooking' interspersed with 'You are trespassing! Your presence has been noted by camera and authorities have already been alerted!!'

Nice welcome there...

Most of the barns in Neb. seemed to have this forward point on the roof:

Makes it a little more aerodynamic, don't you think?

Oh, and the best part of our Neb. pass-thru: the sunset.

Obsession, or Nothing Else to Photograph?

Mike and I are a tad obsessed with passive energy. Solar panels, passive heated homes, skylights...
... and wind turbines. Dang, but do we ever love us some turbines. Graceful white birds of (more or less) clean energy, they stand proud and nobly salute the sky, ready to harness the natural wind to power our microwaves, hair dryers, and wireless internet routers.

Oh, and in east Nebraska, there's not much else to take photos of, at least in January. So here are some more:
This was actually the curvy, hilly part of eastern NE. It flattened out after a while and bored us to friggin' tears after about three hours. I have heard jokes about it before, but now I realize just how boring of a place it actually is. At least the people were nice...
